Some of those changes have been in an effort to improve the game for current players, like the 2.0 Weapon Balance update, while others have tried to entice new players. While Destiny may have a loyal fan base of thousands, Bungie's moves pre-Taken King have shown that the developer is not satisfied with the status quo. Granted, it’s unclear if the boost will also unlock any perks along the way, but at least you will have access to higher gear right off the bat. So, if you’ve been waiting to roll that Titan, Warlock, or Hunter, just hold off a little longer and there will be far less work involved. Any current Destiny players who want to boost a new character – like, say, one of the new Guardian subclasses – directly to the new content can do so as well. The good news, though, is that those Destiny veterans can take advantage of the one-time boost as well. "Today at Gamescom it was revealed that every edition of Destiny: The Taken King will include one character boost, which allows players to instantly level up any existing or newly created guardian to the minimum level required to play The Taken King." Right now, all Destiny veterans are running around at level 34 and itching for new content, along with running Prison of Elders and Trials of Osiris. Now it’s unclear what that starting level may be, but most assume it is the current level cap of 34. According to the Destiny publisher, there will be a one-time use item included with The Taken King that takes players from level 1 and boosts them all the way up to the starting level for the new content. Word of this level boost comes courtesy of Activision, who wanted to share a few extra details about getting newcomers up to speed. Or, they can skip right to the front of the line with a new one-time boost. Because they have not contributed to the 2 billion+ total play hours of Destiny, these newbies will need to comb through a lot of vanilla content before they reach the new stuff. However, those new Destiny players will enter The Taken King at a significant disadvantage. And like an MMO, Destiny is almost set to unleash its first major expansion, The Taken King, which is said to drastically revamp the experience for old and new players alike. Bungie may not like to call Destiny an MMO, but they sure aren’t shying away from adopting the genre’s more popular features either.
